Majjhima nikaya-sutta pitaka
(Medium discourses of Buddha)

The year 2006 saw the combination of Buddhist monks of eight nations who for the first time sat together for the chanting of the doctrines of Lord Buddha. We have since, come a long way indeed. We are much privileged to have other Buddhist monks of seven other countries at this year’s most exhilarating religious event; the much looked forward to chanting ceremony where the river of pure doctrines of Buddha will begin to flow-cascading to every nook and corner of the universe. This year we shall be chanting in unison, the discourses of Majjima Nikaya of the Sutta Pitaka. It is comprised of the medium length discourses of Lord Buddha.
At the first, “Dhamma Sangayana” (convocation of the doctrines of Lord Buddha) held after the “Parinibbana” (Passing away) of Lord Buddha, there was unanimity that the teachings of the Buddha which at that time was sometimes erroneously interpreted by some unenlightened monks, needed to be refined and purified. This was direly needed.

India
Bangladesh
Cambodia

Nepal

Thus all Bhikkus who heeded this call for unification set about cleansing of the Dhamma. Great Arahant Kassapa was instrumental in organizing this most important gathering of all concerned Bhikkus. At this moment, the teachings of Buddha mainly named as Tripitaka (Three baskets). Sutta Pitaka, Vinaya Pitaka and Abhidhamma Pitaka are the three baskets of Tripitaka. The pure doctrines of Budddha in Sutta Pitaka (basket of discourses) was compiled for five books as Nikaya and entrusted with the responsibility for participated bhikkus. The pupils of Great Arahant Sariputta who was the most intellectual of the Buddha’s disciples were entrusted with the responsibility of memorizing the discourses of Majjima Nikaya for posterity.
